Freedom Riders

American Experience presents this inspirational documentary which tells the true story of the courageous civil rights activists who traveled through the Deep South via public transportation in 1961. Viewers will learn how this integrated band of college students risked everything to draw attention to local policies in the South which enforced segregation, despite a 1960 federal ruling which outlawed discrimination in interstate passenger transportation. The program reveals how the Freedom Riders succeeded in bringing the president and the American public face to face with the challenges of correcting civil-rights inequities that plagued the nation. Directed by award-winning filmmaker Stanley Nelson, the film is partly based on Raymond Arsenault's acclaimed book Freedom Riders: 1961 and the Struggle for Racial Justice.
