When Hate Becomes a Crime
What are hate crimes? And what can or should be done to prevent and punish them? The program defines what constitutes a hate crime and reviews the number of hate crimes that happen each year. It looks at the origins and spread of the Ku Klux Klan and other hate groups, and their growing influence today. And it looks at hate laws- and at the legality and desirability of providing additional punishment for hate crimes. Finally, the program examines what might drive someone to commit a hate crime and talks about the need to prevent hate before it becomes a crime.
The program comes with a 12-page teacher's guide with reproducible activities and discussion questions and a full-color 17" x 22" classroom poster with an anti-hate message.
